How To Sew the Seam on your Decorative Pillow

There are different kinds of decorative pillows that you can use for your home such as floor pillows, novelty pillows, and throw pillows. These pillows are under the decorative category because that is just exactly what they are for – to accent your room. Decorative pillows can emphasize the theme of your room or complement it. Whether it does the primary or the latter, you might be planning to give it a new look. Before deciding to replace them with new ones, consider adding seams to them to “upgrade” their look.

You can easily sew seams on to your decorative pillow with just a little knowledge of working sewing machines and a few materials that you can find at home.

Follow these steps if you want to sew the seam on your decorative pillow:

Prepare the materials that you will need

Gather the following for sewing the seam on your decorative pillow:

  • Sewing machine
  • Matching thread for your pillow fabric
  • Shears or scissors
  • Pillow fabric
  • Pins
  • Measuring tape
  • Iron and board

Sew on the first seam

Take your pillow fabric and have its right sides out. Measure a ¼’ seam all around. Pin the pillow fabric together by markings that you made for the ¼ inch seam. Use your sewing machine to stitch the seam. Work your way around the pillow. When you are done, take out the pins that you used to mark your seam.

Trim the seam allowance. Trim out the excess seam allowance at leaving 1/8 inch from the edge’s stitching.

Press the seam

Turn the pillow fabric with its wrong sides out. Now get your iron and board and press the seam that you just made. Make sure that the seam is flattened before you iron it and not kept open. Take into consideration the kind of fabric that you are using and set your iron accordingly.

Sew on the second seam

Once you are done ironing the edges of the pillow, measure another ¼ inch seam all around. Make sure that you are going beyond the stitches of your first seam. Pin the fabric into place and start sewing. Again, work your way around the edge of the pillow and take out the pins when you are done.

Press the pillow fabric

After you are done stitching the second seam of your decorative pillow, turn the fabric with its right sides out. Press the edges of the pillow so that the seam is flattened. Again, make sure that the seam is not open when you press it. If the seam is too bulky or will not stay in place, do a topstitch to keep it in position.

You have now sewn the seam on your decorative easy. With that easy project done, you can create more decorative pillows with seam. Use your imagination and get creative, the things you can do are limitless. Do not be afraid to experiment with the fabric that you use and add accessories or more decoration to your pillow. Enjoy!
