Table of Contents
Make your pattern
Take an old pair of oven mitts and lay it down on a blank sheet of paper. Use a pencil to follow the outline of the oven mitts. Get a pair of scissors and cut out the outline. Now you have a pattern.
Cut out your fabric
Prepare your printed fabric, solid colored fabric and cotton batting. Take the printed fabric and pin the pattern onto the back side of the printed fabric and cut out. Do the same on the right side of the printed fabric, the solid colored fabric, and the cotton fabric. In total, make two pieces of printed fabric, two pieces of solid colored fabric, and four pieces of cotton batting.
Prepare your fabrics for stitching
Take one printed fabric, one solid colored fabric, and two pieces of cotton batting. Put the fabrics on top of each other with the solid colored fabric on top, followed by the two pieces of cotton batting, and then finally the printed fabric with the right side facing out. Do the same with the other set of fabrics. Once you have the two separate sets ready, pin them so they stay in place.
Quilt the fabrics
Take one set of fabrics with any side up and measure one inch diagonally straight stitching lines from the lower left side of the bottom to the upper right top. Do this all over the surface of the fabric. Do the same from the lower right bottom to the upper left top, creating one inch diamond patterns all over. Now sew the set of fabrics together following the diagonal lines. Do the same with the other set of fabrics.
Put the two sets of fabric together
Take the two sets of fabrics and pin them together. The right sides of the printed fabrics should be facing each other in the middle of the two sets of fabrics. Pin them together to make it stay in place.
Sew the oven mitt
Start sewing the edges of the oven mitts using a sewing machine in over-lock stitch. Remember not to stitch through the opening as this is where you will be putting your hand in.
Finish off the oven mitts
Turn the oven mitts inside out so that the right side of the printed fabric is in proper place. Take your bias tape and stitch it onto the edge of the opening. Leave about two inches of bias tape on the corner to make the loop for hanging. Fold the excess bias tape in half and stitch.
Your oven mitts are now ready for using. You will be saving a lot of money from making your own oven mitts and having fun doing it too!
