Velour is a fabric that looks like velvet but it’s cheaper and easier to cut and sew. This is usually made from cotton but can also be made from other materials like polyester. This fabric is used in making clothes as well as upholstery.
One of the products, which are usually made using velour is a robe. This is a soft material so you will feel comfortable wearing this and it will snug or hug nicely on your body. This will also give you the classy look for your robe even if it’s not really that expensive. Sewing your own velour robe is cheaper than buying one. You will also be able to choose the size that you want.

Prepare the things that you will use
These are velour fabric, pattern, tailor’s chalk, sewing machine, thread, needle and pin. Buy enough fabric to use in sewing a robe as you need to consider the nap. A fabric with nap has a color that changes shade when looking on other angles. The parts that you will use for your robe should have the same nap so that these will not look like they were cut from different fabrics.
Clean the fabric
Wash the fabric before sewing it by following the instructions provided by the velour manufacturer. This is included when you purchase the fabric. It’s important to follow the instructions to prevent damaging your fabric as it needs proper care.
Make your pattern
Start creating the patterns for the parts of your robe. You will use this as your guide in sewing the fabric. Make sure to have seam allowance where you will pin the pattern to the fabric. This is also where you will sew the pieces together. Cut the pattern so you can use this on your fabric.
Cut the fabric based on your pattern
Pin the pattern to the fabric on the seam allowance that you added on your pattern. Cut the fabric by following the pattern that is attached to it. Make sure the parts have the same nap so they will look like they really came from the same fabric.
Sew the velour robe
Now that you have all the pieces for your velour robe, pin one side of the robe together so you can easily sew it. Once one side is pinned, start sewing from the shoulder of that side then the arms until you finish sewing that side. Sew the other side of the robe once done with one side. Sew the edges of the robe as well. Place the pockets on their position and sew these in place. Do this around the belt area as well.
Turn the robe inside and out and place this in the dryer. Dry this for about 10 minutes. Once done, you can now use your robe when taking a bath. You can do more with using other colors so that you have other robes to use when the other one needs to be washed.
