Are you a ’60s babe who remembers dancing in a cage above a cloud of dry ice? A go-go boot stocking may reveal your true self to Santa – and remind your kids that you, too, were once young and funky.
Getting Your Materials Ready
Steps:
1. Purchase 1 yard of gleaming black or white fabric as well as a 15-inch hefty plastic or metal zipper.
2. Draw a go-go boot on a piece of paper to create a pattern. The bootleg should be about 15 inches tall, with a width of 6 inches at the ankle and 8 inches at the top. The boot’s foot should be 10 inches long, with a toe height of 2 inches and an ankle height of roughly 4 inches.
3. Draw a second line 5/8 inch outside the previous line’s perimeter.
4. On the outer line, cut out the pattern.
5. Right side up, pin the pattern to a single sheet of fabric and cut out one side of your boot.
6. Carefully fold your paper design in half along the length of the leg where the boot zipper will be placed.
7. Cut a 1 1/4-inch space down the length of the boot between the two sections of the pattern.
8. Pin your cut design to the backside of your cloth and cut around it.
9. Cut the cloth in half across the 1 1/4-inch space in the middle.
Tips:
Place an actual go-go boot on the paper and draw around it to create your basic pattern.
Play around with the pattern until you’re happy with it. A hefty toe and a sharp square heel are the distinguishing features of a go-go boot.
When you cut out the boot, it should appear to be quite huge. Otherwise, it’ll be too narrow for stocking stuffers after it’s put together.
Putting the Zipper in
Steps:
1. Fold the two cut edges under 5/8 inch and iron in place on the cloth boot that has been split in half.
2. Secure one edge of the zipper with a pin.
3. Using a zipper foot, sew the zipper and cloth together. Rep with the opposite edge.
Tips:
When stitching the zipper, make sure it’s zipped all the way up and the pull is 1 inch below the top of the boot fabric.
Position the needle on the side of the attachment closest to the zipper when using the zipper foot sewing machine attachment.
A zipper is frequently hidden by the fabric edges. Pull the cloth back a touch before stitching to show off the ornate zipper on this stocking.
Putting the Stocking Together
Steps:
1. With the correct sides facing in, pin the two boot pieces together.
2. Beginning at the top of the boot, stitch around the diameter of the stocking, 1/2 inch from the edges.
3. Sew a 1/8-inch seam outside the first one.
4. Fold the top edge down 1/4 inch before folding it back over 1/4 inch. Place the stitching in place.
5. Cut a 4-inch-long, 2-inch-wide piece of fabric. One long edge should be folded over 1/4 inch and ironed in place.
6. Fold the lengthwise fold in thirds, tucking the raw edge inside.
7. Iron and stitch the fabric in place throughout its length.
8. Make a loop with the fabric strip and pin it to the upper back edge of the boot. This will be the stocking’s hanging loop.
9. Sew the loop to the boot fabric’s wrong side.
10. Cut the seam allowance fabric perpendicular to the seam to soften the contours of the boot.
11. Remove the boot from the inside and turn it right side out.
Warnings:
Be careful not to cut through the stitching while trimming the seam at the curves.
