How to Do Beadwork

Curtains in author Mark Twain’s Connecticut mansion sparkled with thousands of tiny beads embroidered onto the fabric. For a touch of Victorian elegance, add beads as you sew.

Steps:

  1. Make a backstitch – begin at the right end of the pattern line.
  2. Visualize points 4-3-1-2 an equal distance apart along the line.
  3. Bring the needle up through the bottom of the fabric at point 1.
  4. Insert the threaded needle at point 2, and then bring it up at point 3.
  5. Slip one bead through the needle and onto the thread.
  6. Continue to backstitch. Insert the needle at point 1, then bring it up at point 4.
  7. Continue repeating this sequence, working from right to left and adding one bead to each stitch.

Tips:

All stitches must be of equal length.
